Strange thing this germination....
« on: April 14, 2007, 15:49 »
I sowed 12 marigold seeds to put around my carrots (companion planting apparently?!) and have got a massive 11 little seedlings hardening off
However, I sowed (more scattered actually) about 50 mint seeds and have only got 3 coming through!!!
What a strange, unpredictable thing this gardening is!!!
You can take a horse to water....but a pencil must be lead!!
(No chemicals ......yet!)

It's the other way around for me lots of mint coming up but out of about 30 marigold seeds only 1 has come up.

Those 3 little mint may come back to haunt you1 Protect your marigolds from slugs `cos they love them.

I find marigold seeds really easy to germinate.  Last year I had some marigold seed I had grown from a seed packet and saved a lot of the seeds.  They were really prolific so had loads of seed from one pot.  Have now this year germinated enough from those seeds to fill 8 x18" troughs.  didn't do anything special with seed left it in a plastic bag in conservatory.

On the other hand scattered, rather than germinated indoors, last year Calendula, poppys and some marigolds .........not one came up.  Scattering seeds over a bed never seems to work for me.

Planted nasturtiums in pots in the veggie garden, noticed today that they have germinated....and are sticking up little green shoots.

Also got some more lavender for the veggie garden to plant with the currants.
