I have a nice *firm* patch of ground i think would be good for my brassicas, but it is a bit shady.

Being shady, it is also sheltered from the wind.

That should not be a problem, mine are under debris netting which is quite shady and they are loving it - the caulis in particular.

Mine are in rows at right angles to a 6ft high hedge. The ones nearest the hedge are in shade most of the time and the ones furthest away are in full sun all the time. I would say that the ones in full sun are a little bigger (taller) but the ones in shade have more leaf and, of course, the shady soil doesn't dry out so quick so less watering. Seems either way works.
