American Mildew & Iron deficiency
« on: June 11, 2009, 21:47 »
Could anyone advise please on dealing with the two problems above?

My Fruit Expert book says to spray Supercarb to combat American Gooseberry Mildew and to water my Cox apple tree with MultiTonic for a possible iron problem.  I can't find either product on-line and am unsure if either are organic (they don't sound it!).

As I have already lost half the crop of gooseberries on one bush to this problem I would appreciate any ideas.

Thanks

A lot of older commercial remedies have been banned. supercarb sounds like it might be bicarbonate of soda and water solution with some dishwash liquid to make it stick. That helps with powdery mildew. Sometimes the plant is more dry at the roots than you realize and the mildew forms.

Not heard of apple trees needing iron. Usually a good all purpose fertilizer scratched into the soil surface and then a light mulching with old manure will perk up trees considerably. And a good deep watering if its been dry.

As Trillium says, a lot of the stuff suggested by Dr Hessayon is now withdrawn so that's probably why you can't find the specific products.

I've tried looking on the pesticides database and they don't appear in the current product names - but quite frankly that website is so awful it's impossible to find anything you want.  Whoever designed it needs to look at it from a user's viewpoint cos it certainly wasn't designed for them at the mo    I've found information before but cannot re-find it now despite over 30 mins of searching.

Sorry rant over.

Go with what Trill said  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Is sequestered Iron what you're looking for for the apple tree...but it's usually used for lime hating plants..so can't see why an apple would need it

Coxes are not easy apples to grow.  How big is the tree? Is it an old tree or a youngster?  is  there grass and weeds growing right up to the trunk? What is it doing wrong?

Cheers,

Gillie

I would take the advise that your expert has to give to you - they are experts for a reason, right? Are you sure that is what you're looking at anyway?

Thanks everyone - have only just had chance to check out replies - so will try suggestions.

With regards to the apple tree the tree is a cox apple on M27 (I think) stock so a dwarf tree and is about 2 years old and planted in a bed so no grass around it.  Some of the leaves are yellowing around the edges and fall off if touched.  When I checked the Fruit Expert book the only thing that looked like that was iron deficiency but if anyone thinks it might be something else please let me know.

How much rain have you had?  Could it simply be parched?
