Rust on Garlic
« on: June 15, 2009, 08:31 »
My garlic (that was overwintered), I planted it in October I think last year, has rust - or at least thats what the description matches in my Hessayon book.

How should I deal with it - do you think the garlic would be ready to life now or do I strip the affected leaves  and leave the garlic in place ?  Any ideas ?

Thanks,
Moomin Mama

My garlic suffered rust last year, most plants covered.
I just left them and harvested as usual and all was ok.

Don't lose too much sleep the crop is normally ok. Note though you should burn or other wise dispose of stems ie don't compost. Also avoid alliums in that spot (onions/leeks/garlic) for as long as possible afterwards.
