Seed Longevity
« on: June 18, 2009, 17:58 »
Hi folks.

we all know that some seeds like parsnip and carrots are prone to fail if they are not fresh, but as I have loads of seeds left over this year that I didn't get round to sowing in time (lots of different brassica types, peas, beans, fennel, sweetcorn, globe artichokes) I wanted to know if they would still be viable next year or will I have to buy new again?

the packet says sow by 2010 / 2011 on most packets.  how strict is this rule?

If its any help, I planted some beetroot seeds B/B Dec 2008. I've got 14 plants so far. Don't know if they'll do the biz below ground, but they were happy enough to make an appearance, and I thought I'd nothing to lose by sowing them

Most will last for years, but have a look at this page on this very site...

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've sown a couple of things including carrots that had 2007 on. Been trying to use up before buying new. No problems as of yet
