[Chicken n Veg]

Hi all,

I am a novice to keeping hens (just over a month) and currenty have 8 birds - 5 pullets and 3 ex-battery hens. One of the ex-battery hens keep laying eggs with prominent ridges / wrinkles. Today we had a very large egg (90g) with particularly pronounced ridges.

I understand, from responses to an introductory post I made in the Chicken Chat board, that as birds get older that their eggs may indeed become less consistent in appearance in colour (and can be more wrinkled). This is presumably particularly true for a rescue hen ? From the attached picture is the wrinkled egg we got today something we should be concerned about ? Is there something we can do to help the hens ? They have plenty of grit and oyster shells and are currently free ranging. They do mostly eat layer pellets, with some corn and whatever they can forage.

As far as I can tell all of the hens are well - eating and drinking well, lively, with shiny feathers. No signs of colds or mites. The contents of the ridged eggs are perfect and although very wrinkled the shell does not seem particularly thin.

Note: the actual egg actually looks more wrinkled than the photo - my poor photography and lighting skills I'm afraid.

Older hens produce old (odd) looking egg but taste just the same as you throw away the shell dont worry.Cant be sold as grade A another reason why battery hens become ex-battery hens.
