broody hen
« on: June 09, 2009, 09:30 »
My broody warren is sat on six eggs i got off fleabay its been 19 days of sitting she has not disgarded any of the eggs and every day when i lift her off them to get her to feed and have a 10 min runabout  i feel the eggs they feel as heavy as when i first got them and i can feel no movement ,they are lovely and warm.Is it likely they are fertile or would you expect to feel movement? also i have bought some chick feed [if i get any chicks]will the chicks move about right away and start to feed themselves ,how will i offer them water without running the risk of them drowning

They will start to hatch around 21 days, I saw no movement in mine whenever the hen got off them but yesterday 4 hatched and today more are doing so - she is sat on 11 it was 12 but she either squashed it or decided it was no good. When they hatch the chicks can go for upto 48 hours without food or water but I put a few crumbs in a small bowl and water in a little dish with marbles in - this is to stop them drowning themselves which apperently they can do. After a few days they can then have it in a normal food and water container. When you got your eggs did you rest them for 24 hours and did you count the day they went under the hen as day 0?
Staffies are softer than you think.

Not to worry,it's just something thats advised by some peeps on here although others haven't done so and had excellent results  :D.
They should start to hatch in about 2 days time, don't worry about you not feeling them move you can be sure the mother hen can  :D.
Hatching can take a couple of days, mine are still making their way out of their shells and today is day 23 (didn't start till day 22 - think Sundays thunder and lightening may have put them off!!!).
The mother hen will know which are not going to hatch and just abandon any that have either died or are infertile when she is ready.
Let us know how you get on and don't forget photos  :D
