Caterpillars on greenhouse toms
« on: July 18, 2009, 13:42 »
Hi - after noticing the first ripe fruits on our Tumbling Tom had been eaten by something - big hole in the side - I found 2 large green caterpillars... googling it looks like they're possibly Hebrew Character moth larvae...anyone else had this problem?

M

(they went for bird food... :)  )

Had a few two years ago, they come in green and brown varieties the green ones blend in well don`t they  :D.
I found the best method is to give the plant a gentle shake then pick them off the compost when they fall.

Mine are being eaten by slugs but haven't noticed any caterpillars.

I'm having a serious caterpillar invasion this year. Just keep checking and removing or squishing. (I don't normally like bugs so bare finger squishing is an achievement)

The Bugs have arrived in my greenhouse now!  :(

Spent an hour with a thin paint brush and a tin mug collecting caterpillars then took them out to the lawn and sliced them each into two!  >:(

This is my second or third year with this problem! Like you say, you see a lovely big tomato ripening on the plant, on closer inspection it falls off in your hand and has a very large chunk taken out of it! Every year I vow to myself to get screening up at the door and over the windows, as I leave them open all the time at this time of year. Every year I forget.........
