Can anyone identify this sad-looking fruit tree?
« on: June 07, 2009, 15:17 »
Hi everyone,

Was going to dig up this very sickly tree until I realised it has fruit growing on it which look kind of like peaches.  Does anyone know what it is and whether the tree might be treatable?  It would be a shame to get rid of it if it can be saved especially if there's something edible to be had  :)

Looks very like a tree i have in my garden, and that turned out to be a necterine, it also has leaves that look exactly same as yours, it has peach leaf curl which is a virus apparently  carried by rain drops. Dont know what the cure is though.

I'm wondering if you have an almond tree there?

They have longer leaves and furry "fruit" which encase the nut - although it seems a little early for such well developed "fruit" at this time of year.  We had one in our garden when I was a child.

What size is the "fruit" you have

Yes, it's peach leaf curl and the tree is likely a peach tree.

Here are some previous threads on this problem:

Think peach or nectarine is more likely :)

Thanks folks - looks like I'll have to try rescuing it if I can - I can't resist the thought of eating peaches from my own peach tree  :)

If peach leaf curl then treatment is basically that for fungal infection.
RHS have this bit of info:
http://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profiles1200/peach_leaf_curl.asp

Pick up any leaves that fall as they will allow the fungus to get into the ground and so cause further infection next year.

If you lose a lot of leaves this year then feed the plant as the infection will weaken it. After that I guess the answer is to get an appropriate fungicide and apply at regular intervals. Then see if that cures the problem.

The long narrow leaves are dead giveaway that it's peach.
