My ex-batts seem to find it a struggle to get in and out of their hen house.  The ladder is narrow (6inches wide) and steep, as the entrance is 20inches from the ground.  They stand at the door way for ages, try and take a cautious step, go back in the house, come back out and eventually flap to the ground.  Getting back in is even more prolonged.  Is this normal faffing hen behaviour? Will they get more agile (I've had them a week)?  Or should I make them a wider ladder, and if so, any tips as I'm not good at DIY.

Yes they will get more agile.
Do not forget that an exbatt has only lived in a cage so there leg muscles have not been used properly and will take time to get stronger.
It probably takes allot of effort for them to get up and down.

Hello SusieB,
Try putting  a brick or two under the bottom end of the ladder, which will make a gentler slope.  The hop off at the bottom should be no problem to them then.  Make sure the bricks cannot wobble over though.
