Fruit Tree in memory of dad
« on: June 04, 2009, 10:31 »
Hi All
My dad passed away last Sunday, i want to plant a fruit tree in the allotment, to remember him by. I was wondering if anyone knew of an apple, pear, or plum tree with a suitable name that i could plant, and that is easy to get hold of. Many thanks

Sory to hear your sad news ((((hugs))))

I have no idea on fruit trees sorry. Our neighbours had a victoria plum tree which always had a large crop. Try your local nursery they usually are cheaper and more imformative than garden centres  :)

Sorry to hear that gorymorph - what a lovely idea planting a tree in memory.

I guess it depends on what sort of memories you hold of your father and any maybe what kind of person he was.

Most fruits carry a variety name, so it might be a case of trying to match one up to how best you would describe your dad or think he would want to be remembered e.g. was he an inquisitive person - perhaps in apples Discovery would be a good one ....known as a fighter or principled person Grendadier, Spartan or Golden Noble.... fun loving and mischievious Merton Knave, or if he was fond of apple pie a good old Bramley etc. etc.

I'm sure there are pears and plum trees with similar names and associations

Perhaps check out what google can throw up for varieties and then follow it up with fruit tree suppliers. Garden centres still have them in stock, but if it is an uncommon one you choose, you may need to order it and it might not be available until next year.

Good luck :)

Nothing constructive to add regarding a suitable fruit tree (although I do like Barney's suggestions), but just wanted to offer my condolences on your sad loss.
