An update for anyone who may be interested.

We got Rosie to the vets first thing this morning and she had a shot of Baytril with mopre medication to do the rest of the girls. He did say that anything you can do to help their breathing, such as steam etc whilst waiting to get to your vet can only help to make them more comfortable.

Within a couple of hours she had perked back up a bit, still breathing a bit laboured, but much easier than she was. She was also happy to mooch about the pen and assert her authority when some corn was dished out. Hopefully things will move upwards now.

Anyone got any advice on dosing Baytril? I know they say mix it with so much water, but to make sure they get equal measures, is it possible to administer it like worming powder, ie, putting an amount inside a grape?

Hi there
 hope shes on the mend!
my girls had same thing about a month ago but i gave them each 0.6ml dose in a small syringe directly down their throat twice a day!
only since the infection i found out the vet gave me the 2.5% baytril not the 10% so that explains why we still lost layla!!!!!
thinks her guardian angel`s gone on strike !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to hear about your chook.

We've been wrapping them in a towel and giving exactly the same dosage of 2.5% strength Baytril with a syringe but also mixed in with water as our vet said, but he didn't say how much water to add. The bottle says to give .4ml per Kg of body weight, so ours have been having between .5 and .6 with water. apparently they have to have this twice a day as you say for a week. I didn't know that you could get the extra strength stuff.

I don't see that we have much choice at the moment but to dose as instructed and keep our fingers crossed

It was just when i went on the baytril website it said that the 2.5% was for calves and the 10% was for poultry!???? I dosed with the 2.5%
Anyway after 7 days of treatment, 10 days withdrawal and over 100 eggs thrown away!!  I now have a tub of aureomycin which has no egg withdrawal! just in case we have any re current infections

Ah, at last, someone who knows about the egg withdrawal period. I know we can't eat any whilst they are being dosed, but how long after the last dose do you have to discard them?

Thanks Debbie,

We do something similar (if there are any left over from family members who adore them  :) ). Our vet wasn't too sure of how long to leave them, but said in the absence of any advice from the drug company then to leave them for 30 days after the last treatment. Take it that yours were all ok. Did it prevent anyone from sneezing who ate one  ;)

One vet told me 7 days from end of treatment, another said 14 days and even longer advised on here.
I was also told that I could hard boil some of the eggs, chop 'em up and feed back to the girls, while they are still on the anti-b.  They all wolfed their treat down.  I did that twice in the treatment week, but still too painful to throw the rest of the eggs away.
Instead, I put two or three large clutches of the eggs down near the badger run and they had a lovely feast.  I reckoned that as they are wild, it would not matter if they built up a resistance to anti-biotics, as never likely to be given any.
