Tom food ratio?
« on: June 01, 2009, 22:01 »
Would a ratio of NPK of N26 P17 K52 or as a percentage N 2.6 P 1.7 K 5.2 be right for Tom food?

No I picked some up today in our pound shop, just wondered if it was anything near the right formula.

Yes, tomatoes need a higher potash content, the K bit.

Tomorite and Doff Tomato Feed have ratios between N, P, and K of close to 1:1:2, so your looks about right.

Are you making your own?

It wouldn't be a problem, I have all the stuff.

If you keep tropical fish and grow aquatic plants the best way to get them to grow is to use "Dry fertilisers, so I have bags of N, P, K and trace elements, you mix them to how you want and add them to water in measuring jug then pour in the tank.

Don't know how cost effective it would be, but there are several shops in the UK selling the chemicals, and thinking back I am sure I saw a Tom food recipe on one of them, I will see if I can find it.

Here you go although no mention of Tom food, and I make no claim as to cost effectiveness, when used in a fish tank it is for a very specific purpose in a micro environment, but if some one has a spare five minutes and a degree in chemistry they can work out if it's worth it for gardeners.
