Jaundiced looking hen?
« on: June 01, 2009, 07:56 »
Hi Folks, i've not been on here for a while however I now have a rather jaundiced looking hen and wondering what could be wrong with her.

She is one of the ex bats I got around 18 months ago, she (they all have) have been really healthy happy chucks however recently i've noticed her wattle seems to have shrunk and is a sort of yellowy pink colour.  Her legs & beak too seem more yellow than the other chucks.  Her feathers also are very dark.

She seems to sleep alot however otherwise appears ok, she still mixes with the others, grubs around for food and comes running at the slightest hint of a treat.

Could this just be old age (considereing previous life) or something more serious, I don't want to put her through the stress of a vet visit unnecessarily.

i've absolutely no idea what the sypmtoms she's showing are, i would have thought that 3 years old for an ex batt is a good age, i would just keep an eye on her and fingers crossed she will improve.

Is she laying? I found that mine have a yellow tinge which is especially noticeable on their legs when not laying. They lose it and have pinky-white legs after they have been laying for a few months.
Perhaps she is going through the change?

well, it could be something like fatty liver syndrome, common in commercial layers, the symptoms do sound similar. Just in case make sure she is not too heavy, limit treats and pop some Battles poultry drink or a vitamin supplement (not Poultry spice in this instance) and see how she is, if she doesn't look in any discomfort I would just keep a close eye on her. :) As everyone has pointed out, 3 years for an exbatt is a good innings! :)

Hi folks, thanks for the replies.

She is not laying anymore last laid around December (my other remaining ex bat is still laying daily).

She is also rather underweight and since posting she's developed a squishy crop.  I've massaged it and i'm trying to get yoghurt into her, however I think that this is another issue.

They are regularly wormed.
