sprouts - incropping?
« on: May 20, 2009, 16:38 »
I have spent the day building a lovely frame for my sprouts. however, i think that i am only going to get 5 plants in if i have to plant them 36" apart ....as there will be a lot of wasted ground space, is there something i could grow in between to maximise use of the space?
 ???

I grow mine slightly closer at 30", but you'll need something fast growing before the sprouts crowd it out.

Salad crops are probably your best bet.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm kicking myself that I didn't plant some lettuces (that I had raised is 3" pots) between my Sprouts.  I'm sure there will be room, and the lettuces have now taken up their own bit of plot-real-estate too :(

I'm going to keep an eye on both this year and see if the lettuces would still "fit" between the Sprouts when they [the Lettuces] are ready for harvesting

If you're thinking of Purple Sprouting Broccoli - these are even bigger & mature later than sprouts. Guess that's no!

Goose - pak choi or 40day Portuguese 'Nabo Greleiro' which I think translates as turnip broccoli, Rapini, or  Broccoli Raab. They won't upset your rotation either. 'Nabo Greleiro' makes a great green as a vegetable, or in soups.

Peagod is going to shout at me for sure  :(

But I inadvertently moved some soil into my sprout bed that had (I thought) mouse eaten peas in there...now Ive got luverly pea seedlings in there...not a lot, only about 4.

So ive kept them (cant bear to kill them the brave souls) and will see what happens..probably nothing  :D

The only thing I can see wrong is the waste of time and energy in only setting 4!

Thes may be OK as they crop early, but 4 plants? A well, I suppose it's a nibble.

I didnt deliberately plant 4! They were just pea seeds left in the soil that I moved to raise another bed (just to make that clear  :D )

Sheesh 4 plants?!!! That wouldnt give me a mouthful

I had a Melon come up in some seed sowing compost that I reused to sow some lettuces (not that I recommend reuse of seed compost  :tongue2:)

Now then ... is it the 6 seed for £3.49  Bastion?, or, knowing my luck!, the loads-seeds for £1.99  variety :tongue2:
