onions
« on: May 27, 2009, 10:38 »
I have planted some onions and they seem to be doing ok.But i have been told that they are to deep. This is my first growing season so don't know very much about anything.I planted the sets so the top just poked out of the ground, will this affect the growth of the onion bulb? And should i move some soil from around them?

When hoeing most crops like carrots or beans hoe soil towards the plants. When hoeing onions hoe soil away.

On light soil I would not worry. On heavier soil move some soil away as this will help them ripen later.

That is pretty much how I have planted Onion sets for the last few years, can't say I have had any problems, they always end up on top of the soil.

I agree, I always plant my sets with the tip just out of the soil and have never had any problems, in fact some just bury them to stop the birds from pulling them out. So just leave them alone and see how yours do against whoever told you they were too deep.

I use the "hide them from the birds" method & bury them when planting. Never had a problem.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The only reason for not burying is that if under the ground they are more prone to rot. If they haven’t rotted already then you should be fine. For the record I grow on top of ridges (to keep them dry and the frost off), half bury and then protect from birds with pea sticks and string over them.

Thank you all for your great advice,it was the father in-law who said the are to deep.I'm on hi veg plot in his back yard(as he stopped growing on it a few years ago)he said that the soil would stop the bulbs growing big and all the size would go into the stems. When he grew themi think  he just sat the sets on top of the soil ???
