I've just got builders sand in mine, but you can use old spent potting compost, dry soil from elsewhere in the garden.

Some of our chicks even dust bathe in their shavings!!!

I have chinchilla sand in mine an i got a 'pet toilet' from pets at home. It is simply a plastic corner scoop shaped container but it is perfect for a dust bath and fits neatly into a corner.

Look at my Margret enjoying it in te sunshine!

We use sand pit sand in an old baby bath  with a bit of louse powder in - just in case,

A couple of our hens will only eat dry layers mash and will bath in that sometimes

Ours use any old bit of soil that is in the sun.
