Selling Eggs
« on: April 02, 2007, 16:20 »
Can I sell my fresh surplus eggs, in brand new egg boxes, from outside my front door. I intend to put the laying date on the box, and that they should be stored in a fridge. Are there any laws preventing me from doing this.  :?:  Up to now I have been giving them to the villagers, don't mind doing this, but it would be nice to plough some money back into my animals and vegetables. :)
Happiest in the countryside.
Breathe deeply, and let the butterflies fly in formation!

I've been selling my surplus eggs since September viv.  You are fine seling them privately from your front door or gate whatever, until you have about I thought it was 50 chooks, but I think Munty mentioned 250, then you have to start grading and stamping them.

How many chooks have you got? You may have to rgister with DEFRA after the Avian Flu scare recently, but I can't remember how many chooks you hae to have but Munty will tell you. If he's not here now, he will be soon.

Good luck with them all!!!!

Oh and by the way!  welcome!!!!!!!!

just sell em and dont worry about it .and for avian flu you can register voluntarily if you want .i had to due to the number of birds i had but i willsay dont register with the blooming councils . what a load of prats .just refuse anything thye have to say saying they dont govern your property and as your not in the registration system for comercial rating then you will register with defra and take all advice from them and it was 50 birds or more as a static  number ,,, good day .
still alive /............

i will second that grannieannie, we have just replaced an asbestos roof on our outbuilding, with a proper tiled roof, the council have noticed the work going on and because the roof is 3 or 4" higher now, we have to apply for planning permission, even though we live in about 14 acres with no other houses etc we would affect

Out of interest, what prices are you charging for real eggs?  Full-sized, not banties.

Only reason I ask is that I need to talk to a new neighbour about trading some of their eggs for some of my produce.

I usually sell mine at work for £1.20 per doz. Don't make much but enjoy what people say about the quality of the eggs. :)

As our chooks are ex battery they are older and you get the odd colour shells, strange shapes and sizes etc.  I only sell mine for £1.20 a dozen too, but as they are rescued hens anyway, I'm not that bothered about making a profit from them, but at least they keep themselves in food and straw and shavings, and if I need a few pennies, there is usually a few bob over in the tin
