Radishes ready? (Pic added)
« on: May 18, 2009, 15:08 »
I can see my radishes poking up, they look ready and quite big, can I leave them in the ground, or do I have to pick them now?

Take a thinning or two and try them, varieties vary but all get woody eventually. Better smaller and sweeter than max size and uneatable

Thanks Richard, I will go grab a few... although no idea what to do with them, I don't like them!

Grew them for my Mum and I haven't seen her in almost 2 months.

Nothing wrong with those. I've several lots on the way, but the first lot of French Breakfast had a few left over for weeks. When I pulled them they were about 1" diameter and 2" long. Still not woody and so I could have had more like it. They don't last long here........... :D

We pulled one at the weekend and were amazed at the size - similar to yours - chopped it in half and ate it. Didnt get the flavour through immediately but then the pepperyness started

Yours look fab  :)

Lovely crop Riala, congratulations.

I grow radishes, cos they are easy and they do pretty up a salad when sliced thin.

I also never knew what to do with them. I read recently that in France (i thnk) they eat them whole, dunked in good quality butter, and then dipped in salt. Perhaps not the healthiest thing to do, but if you go easy on the dunking/dipping...it was really very nice!

I like butter and salt for radishes, too - learnt that from a French friend of the family.  Make sure the butter's not too hard, or it won't stay on!

I never knew you could get rainbow radishes, though.  Where do you get them from?

You should try the "radish delight" recipe that I posted, I like to think it encapsulates the moment :D

Rainbow radish Thompson and morgan do.  OH doesn't like the white or yellow ones don't know why, don't eat radish myself and son thought there was something wrong with them as they were a funny colour LOL.  Still I'm gonna finish the packet, bet OH won't even notice when they are in his salad.

On another note I am astonished this year by the size of my french breakfast radishes.  Almost 3" long and a very fat 1" circumference.  Never grown that big before, the only thing different I did was loads of chicken poo in the high rise bed.  I think my onion sets are gonna be whoppas as well looking at the size of theirs necks.
