Very  :D Outdoor varieties would be more siutable IMHO. Mine germinated in five days in the greenhouse and will be ready to put out in Morrison pots fairly soon  :nowink:

In a square ft garden you'd need a bush variety vs the usual climber/rambler like Marketmore and such. Not sure of variety names, just look for a bush type. And they're dead easy to start outside provided you water daily until you see it pop up.

MIne are Marketmore and I grow them in a large pot, with a little wigwam of sticks for support, and the don't take up too much space  :)

Why not grow them up as climbers they will take up less room  :)

I've got 5/5  marketmore come up in an unheated conservatory, in just a few days. :) I'll pot them on today or tomorrow, and then keep them protected but outside until it's safe to plant them out properly.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

In my first year of growing - 3 years ago now - I got a packet of Diana (self fertile) cukes which had 4.  They all grew, I gave two away and kept 2 and had them in the g/house along with the tomatoes.  I trained them up on netting.  The following year, I got the same type, because I did really well.  But I lost them.  My allotment neighbour gave me 4, I lost them as well.  In the end I managed to get 1, which was given to me by another allotmenteer.  So I think you lose some, you gain some.

I hear of a lot of people losing Cucumbers, so I personally would not rate them as easy.

I think most "deaths" are from cold temperatures, wet stem at the base causing rot, or lack of careful handling - the plants are very fragile / brittle.
