Mystery Vegetable?
« on: April 21, 2007, 07:10 »
Whilst clearing glass from my new allotment last night I uncovered a very exciting root vegetable, at first I thought they were oversized jerusalem artichokes but looking at them they seem a bit smooth, and I would have thought there would be millions of them as they are quite invasive aren't they? There were only these two  veg sized ones and lots of long thin roots all round them.

I was able to take a pic of a bit of foliage I don't think it's parsnip foliage is it???
Pic in my gallery.

Thanks

Sautee them unpeeled in a little butter and serve with black pepper.   Post again tomorrow to let us know what they taste like.   This will tell us whether they are poisonous or not ...

Seriously though, I haven't a clue.  Ain't parsnip or JA, from your text I was sure they'd be mooli but the picture ruled that out too (mooli are very smooth).  Any idea how long they might have been there?

The big one on the right looks like yam that I see on the afro-caribean stalls in the market. But wouldn't have thought they grow here, far too cold.  But then again we are getting more tropical here.
Definately not parsnip, jerusalem artichoke or mooli.
The leaves look vine like and yams grow a vine.
Does it have a smell when cut open?
