there you go! home made hydroponics system (kindof).

Ive always been a bit weary of a water cooled pc - it just worries me a bit (water + PC = dead pc!)

Life is a Garden...........................................Dig it!

i had the thought that if you used a liqudi coolong system (simular to what you see in high end gaming pc's to cool the processor) then you could utillise the spare heat as a "waterbath" effect under the plants to stabilise night time temperatures.

maybe one thats worth looking into!

I have a water cooled system, admittedly it got a smidge "customised" when the pump failed so it now runs a few degrees hotter than it should, but it definitely has enough heat to make a waterbath ( my coolant is about 35 deg C on average ) ... the main problem you'd have is the height difference between the pc's base unit and the waterbath .... hmmmm ... I think I may need to talk to Gary again and see if we can throw together a waterbath :D

I'd be very interested to know how to power led's via usb for growing stuff as my pc's on 24/7 for months on end ;)

its very simple, a standard (i.e. not usb2/3) usb cable has 4 leads within its main cable, red, white, green, and black. the black and red are your -+.
the other 2 cables are for the data retreval.

It worked really easily, but may i point out that i'm not an electical genious, and therefore be careful that it doesnt affect you computer. i had it running for 3 days with no problems, but i would advocate a resistor or diode to be used to stop any surges. There are some good bits of advice that i have since found on indestuctables - might be worth a look!

ok, time for an update!

to say that the greenhouse isnt working would be an understatement!
my dorset naga now loos the plant equivelant of anemic!

the leaves are a whiteish green, although the plant still looks fairly healthy.
the plant hasnt grown all that much - so i deduce that the blue on its own is a no-go!

as i posted before i have a number of red superbrights to now play with. need to find some time to make a red and ared&blue rig to try out. i think mi'll try something like cress to see some accelerated results.
i'll try and get some pics up of the poor weeny plant asap - its now in rehab in the greenhouse

Folks he means http://www.instructables.com/. Not Indestructables :D At least i hope so Jonny. Been watching this thread with intrest and started my own inspired project involving several £1 solar garden lights (superbright leds). Been picking up tips and it's working quite well. How are you dealing with watering i noted the hydroponics but failed to see an answer?

BEWARE

Going on that site up there will turn you into a (wo)man in a shed.

Using cress as a guinea pig plant sounds a good idea Jonny ---  get quicker results and you won't sacrifice any chillis
