Tomatoes in growpots - an experiment
« on: May 12, 2009, 15:30 »
Have never used these pots before but my local garden centre was selling last year's off cheaply so I bought three.

I am doing a little experiment in the greenhouse, I have the same tomatoes in two growbags, one has the growpots in them and the other nothing.  I have just been comparing the two and the ones in the growpots are doing much better.  Plants look greener and are starting to flower. The other growbag is trundling along slowly but the plants are not as healthy looking as the others.

Has anyone else found these to be successful?

I always plant my toms in the ex-flower buckets that you can get from Morrisons - they are 8 for 99p .  They are perfect for tomatoes.  Grow bags take up too much room in the greenhouse.  I just put some holes in the bottom, but in some compost, and away you go.  I have lovely toms every year. :D

How funny you should say that Babs, I've just been in Morrisons and bought two lots...how unbelievably cheap are they? When you think how much you pay for pots in garden centres..

I can't wait to get planting now I've got four varietys on the go at the mo and my neighbour has got a different variety for me to try...........plus peppers and chillis......mmmm yum :D

Thanks Parsnip.  I've even grown peppers, cukes and melons  in them - they're greeeaaat :D.  Just don't forget to put holes in the bottom for drainage. ;)

I've got toms in them too, and radishes and carrots and peppers and chillis oh and a few first earlies just for fun  :D :D

I have cut the bottoms of some and used as a kind of ring culture on a growbag, and boy are those toms romping away  :D :D
