Runner beans melted!
« on: May 08, 2009, 11:27 »
When I was rummaging around in a couple of my no-show runner bean pots, I discovered the beans had melted into a sort of gloopy, mucusy chewing gum type substance
- I have never seen this before - quite extraordinary.

Yup happens a lot they just rot off for some reason, specially if the compost is wet. :(
That's why i chit all my beans first, saves wasting compost on the duds :)

i think it`s because your runner beans may have been overwatered so your runner bean may have rotted  :(
theres plenty of time to plant more,we are planting some more at the weekend

Sounds as if I must have.  :(  Oh well, I still have plenty more, there were only about three that did this. I was just surprised - most dud seeds just do nothing, when you dig around, there is the seed looking pretty much as it did when you planted it, but these beans morphed into this gooey mass which I'd never come across before ...

This is what happens if they are too moist, and if the moist soil then gets too hot - ESPECIALLY in those mini-greenhouses with zip up plastic covers.  They get really-really hot, so ventilation is essential. I would say open them every morning, early! and just close at night. There comes a point when even the side panels trap heat.

Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.

My runners and French beans  'melted' and they were in the ground on my plot! so they weren't over watered. There no holes in the ground or tunnels.

I think the Martians took them :tongue2:
The answer lies in what you put into the ground!
