What do salsify seedlings look like?
« on: May 08, 2009, 14:14 »
Well as the title suggests.........
I've located & weeded around my carrots, parsnips, chard & beets, which were swamped with grass & weeds, the last row is of about a dozen salsify plants - however having googled most sites seem to say they "look a little like grass" - which won't help much as everything looks like grass, thistles or young nettles!
Anyone post a link so i don't pull 'em all up again?
Thanks

Photos of Salsify, Scorzonera.  No secondary leaves yet, but I will upload some more pictures when they get some

If growing from seed in open ground they should look like a pale green cross between grass & a leek. Will try and find one later today as I suspect they may look slightly more vigorous than those sown indoors.

Can't manage the seedlings - but here is a flower!
We planted some Salsify and Scorzonera (same family, I think) about 35 years ago and found they were a waste of space and too tricky to prepare, but we have had self seeded plants on the plot ever since.  they are very pretty so we just leave them to grow wherever they like! they open in full sun and close at night. The seed have parachutes, so when the flower goes like a dandelion seedhead, the seeds blow all over the place. Some escape being hoed up and we have nice flowers

Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.

Scorzonera leaf is like a spikey dandelion the flower is similar to  it as well. Like a dande if you leave a bit of root behind it grows , you get a sticky white sap when you prepare the root and severe wind when you eat it !    :D

Pulled a few young ones up earlier this evening (I grow salsify, radicchio, leeks, leaf beet and parsley as overwintering greens for our hens):

Hi, got mine in loo rolls and they are like two blades of grass to start with. I can't wait to try it in spite of the wind warning! Nic.
