New Ex battery hens - wont really venture out
« on: May 05, 2009, 17:41 »
Hi All,

I'mwondering if you can help me. I have my 4 lovely girls now - but they seem reluctant to spend any time outside in the run.
Can it be that they are just no used to it? Or could they be cold?
Also we have only had 2 eggs in 4 days, plus one today with no shell.

Am i just being an over protective new mum?? :-)

Thanks,

Rachael

hiya an welcome to a brand new world . i would just give them time , if they are ex batts then they will be stunned at the big outside world. mine were lucky as they went to a rescue centre for a week before i  collected them but my next lot will be from the farm to me .

they are also probably scared as hell  :( be calm with them an let them settle for a few days before u  think about handling them to much .
as for the eggs in time u will get 4 per day  i am still waiting to hit 16 eggs from 16 girls .
do they have oyster shell an grit thats good for soft eggs also they will probably need worming flubenvet is normally recommended on here . someone else with more expereince will be along shortly .

When we had our last lot of ex-batts, it took them 4 days to venture out of the pop hole, but once they were used to outdoors.  boy they were a joy to watch!  Just be patient, they will come out when they are ready!!

yes, don't worry - the whole thing is a bit overwhelming for them!

It won't be long before they're acting like real chickens - but it might be a while - just enjoy each stage as it comes!

Mine took 3 weeks to come out of the shed. Now we cant get them back in at night.

You do get softies occasionally just make sure they have grit and oyster shell.

Just enjoy this quiet time as they will soon have you trained to answer to there becon call. and give you a row if you go to see them without any treats.

They will be fine, give them time.
