Tomatoes not up - should i give up and buy?
« on: May 06, 2009, 22:07 »
My tomato seeds planted ~a week ago still aren't up. Should i give up and buy some seedlings from a garden centre? I want to get them going as i have 6 growbags currently sitting idle.

I should pop into the Burleydam Garden Centre from about 9.30am, there's a chap there (Sp) that knows a thing or two about tomato growing.  ;) :D

Wait a minute, a week ago?  I would give them more time, it can take 10-14+ days to germinate.  I would give up after past the 3 week mark.  Nothing showing after just 7 days is not highly unusual.

If your desperate for time though, buy some from a garden centre.

As gardeningguru said, give it another week or two at least, mine took longer than a week to show.
It's all too much!

Mine took about three weeks to come up, but were sown outside and we had a cold spell which didn't help - don't give up on them yet

According to my crop records my tomato seed took 6 days to germinate, and that was in a heated propagator!

Not sure if I can  ask one more question on that topic... Like Kristen I have a problem with my tomato seeds: They germinated quickly but it seems like they stopped growing for weeks now: they only got as far as a few centimeters high and 2 narrow leaves...since then nothing: is that normal?? Or should I write them off and buy some ?!
Thanks for any further advice ...Laurence

Laurence I'd be thinking about a problem with the compost... possibly sciarid flies at your roots?

Thanks for your suggestion! The thought did cross my mind... I used the same compost for other seedlings...some went well some did not fare well at all (tomato/thyme and lavender)... It's my first year, so no doubt I will have to face up to some casualties!
Thanks again,
Laurence

"Like Kristen I have a problem with my tomato seeds"

I don't have a problem with mine!!! Second truss just starting to flower ...

"They germinated quickly but it seems like they stopped growing for weeks now: they only got as far as a few centimeters high and 2 narrow leaves...since then nothing"

Sounds like they are not warm enough.  Absolute minimum night temperature 10C, otherwise they will stop (and IME they take a while to get started again).  Could that be it? (If so give them some warmth (bring them in at night??) and they will get going again. They are pretty resilient, I wouldn't give up on them yet.
