peas and netting
« on: May 06, 2009, 08:33 »
do peas need netting from pigoens and is that all their life or just when small.  if you want to take it off later, how do you put up a net  without the rascally little tendrils getting hold of it,  whats the best support + net configuration.  I have some bird netting, lots of canes and a few strongish posts - but can't decide what to build!!  PS thye are only short rows of 4'.
I know its a basic question but I'm a first timer (obviously) and I know some-one here will help.

Usually they only need netting until they are about 6 inches high , when you need to put sticks orther support in place. From then on pigeons may do a bit of grazing but it should not affect the peas. Hang a few CDs up.If however they are persistant you will need to cover.

When the pods develop pigeons, crows and pheasants may take the pods. If they start to you will need to net or hang CDs or other scarers.

If you want to prevent pea moth maggots in the pods you can cover with enviromesh as the first flower buds form. Pea moths lay their eggs at the base of the flower buds.
