onion sets am i to late.
« on: May 04, 2009, 07:12 »
Is it to late to plant out Onion sets i have found some/ lots that got missed.  Would i get a better start if i started them in the green house.  i was thinking of planting out some more or they will go to waste my first lot have been in quite some time.

Im guessing i should try and see really any how.

I'd chuck them in straight into the ground, quickly.

I'm no expert, but what have you got to lose my banging them in?
Perhaps at the end of the season harvest them in  mid September to give them extra time to grow.

I think the worst that will happen is that you will get smaller Onions than usual.

Give it a try.

As long as the onion sets are firm , it is worth giving them a chance, but out in garden - not greenhouse.

Ok peep's thanks i will get them in ASAP.  Smaller Onions is what i was thinking i will know what one was planted first due to the size.

Most of mine are in and growing, but I kept about a dozen back as I was re-doing my herb garden and intend to grow the other Onions in there partially for decoration, I will get round to planting this week and I still expect a crop. And if not I will have some large and very late Spring Onions  ::)

Spring onions take a surprisingly long time to grow and you might find they are overwhelmed by the cabbages. You could bung a few in at the end of the rows to try :)

In a word, no.  Last year was my first and I didn't even get my plot until 1st May, took me 2 weeks to clear it so was at least mid-May before I got my onion sets in - I could only get red ones by then, but they grew fine, had some really good sized ones too.
