Broccoli and colli
« on: April 30, 2009, 19:18 »
My broccoli and colli seedlings don't look too brilliant at the mo. They are about a month old, still only 2 or 3 inches high. Does anyone sow their broc and colli seed straight into the ground? Would it be too late to have a go now?

cheers

I hope it's not too late, because I've just sowed some broccoli! I'll be sowing more cauli in a week or 2 to keep the supply going after the first ones (already in the ground)  have been harvested. ;)

If your seedlings are in pots, they tend to stay quite small till they are planted out, then once they've settled down they have a big growth spurt. Well mine usually do

I think, you would struggle to find one, who do. Slugs would devastate them for a start....

You calm down, they grow slowly. Actually, they are too tall, probably leggy. ;)

Brassicas are ready for planting out when they have 4 to 6 true leaves. This usually means 5 to 6 weeks after sowing.

They are fine sown direct into the ground. When it is dry flea beetle will chew the leaves making shot holes and sometimes killing the plants. Keep well watered and they usually outgrow the damage.
