Riddling soil
« on: April 26, 2009, 00:10 »
Hi

Was thinking today to get the couch out maybe the way forward is to put my soil through a riddle, I could dig down two spits and gradually riddle it all through, might even put a little villiers engine on a riddle, I have designed.  Will have to try and knock it up next week.

Cheers

Dave

I have found myself riddling quite a bit this year. I made a frame from copper piping that sits on my wheelbarrow but I've found that you can't beat a good shake!

Whilst your plan might sound like a bit of a challenge, if you can get a rhythm going you will find that whichever method you use, you can actually get through quite a bit in a fairly short space of time - I can now riddle a 70ltr bag of compost in less than 15 minutes.

I'm sick of riddling soil!  The beloved previous occupant had a thing for thick gravel mulches, which he dumped straight on the compacted clay soil without a membrane.  I'm having to dig down and riddle at least the first spit, and in places two, to get to the bottom of the plum-pudding.  Even after this, the soil is full of the finer pebbles and grit that fell through the mesh.  I'm adding manure and compost as I go, and the only thing that makes it possible to continue is the thought of turning all that horrible hard-stand into actual garden.

I riddled all the soil in a 12x4 raised bed and it was donkey work, but theend result is great. I used a 5x5 homemade riddle with small rabbit wire, 13mm I think.
