I do..

like yesterday when we were doing the spuds

and today,,

I'd prepared a seed bed, ready for Parnsips, when,, the thought occured, should this packet be able to do one row or two, (or maybe three) and I just hadn't got a clue.

So working on the premise that parsnips are a bit dodgy where germination is concerned, and the fact that my nimble fingers ain't as nimble as they could be...

I only got the one row out the packet..

Munty and Whisky Golf, where are you when I reallllllly need ya...

Totally agree Mandycharlie, sometimes you just need reassurance that what you are doing is right especially if you aren't close to the computer or books.

Sow parsnip seeds in stations, groups of 2 or 3 seeds at 4" intervals.  If you like them, you can interplant with radish which will be up quick to mark the rows.  Leave 10" between rows.  Can't say how many rows you'll get 'cos I dunno how long your row is.  There is no point saving seed until next year - it won't grow.  Either plant it, swop it or give it away.

The idea is that you thin each station to leave the strongest seedling.   Much later, you pull alternate stations when the parsnip is at a usable size.  Leaves you a final crop at 8" spacing.   Some might say 3" / 6" but heck - ask 4 people and you'll get 6 different answers.

I think Munty posted a tip on using wet cotton wool to pick up seeds but I'm really not sure.  My understanding of his Lincolnshire typing was only just starting then.

Me packet told me to leave 18 inches... between rows...

I had to scrabble on my knees to get two hand spaces (I knows each hand is about 8'') then left a couple of inches for good measure..

I thought it was alot...

and you says 10"..

but then...

men and their measurements...

Yeah I do wish that sometimes. Wireless on the plot would be nice so I could ask in here.

We ask around the plot and usually end up with several people debating the best way - we never know which one to try. Or we ask plot neighbour who gives advice and we do it. Then someone else comes along and says 'what d'ya do it like that for???'

I guess all we can do is try out advice and find out which works and which doesn't. Fingers crossed will get some food off it this year somehow  :)

Well I've planted my snips 6" on centres, so fingers crossed!  Three seeds at each station.  Will keep an eye out for slugs...

You need not worry if you have such a large gap ... inter plant ... there is now enough space to put in a row of lettuce maybe ... and they will be shielded from wind later in the season by the foliage of the snips  :D

... scary WG I also do several seeds to a hole with 4" gaps !!
