« on: April 24, 2009, 10:15 »

mooching around the garden last night I found three lily beetles sunning themselves and having a munch >:( i've got lilies in the ground and in pots and they're not fussy, were in all of them, just thought I'd give people a heads up!

I've been lucky, 2 years and they haven't found my lillies yet, please don't tell them where I live.

I've had none in the garden since I moved in here, but I found one yesterday on a potted lily my mother gave me that she'd bought as a present.  It's currently isolated in the front (has been since it arrived, more by luck than by design).  I hope to goodness they don't spread to mine or next-door's back garden - we have dozens of lilies each.

The RHS are asking people to notify them of any Lily Beetles found, so that they can work out how far they are spreading.

Three squashed last night here in sunny Herts (well it was sunny last night)
They would have needed water wings today.
Thanks to whoever pointed out that they like fritillarias too as thats where I found them. None on the lilies yet thank goodness!

I don't know alot about them.  My instinct tells me that the cold winter would have killed them off.  So what do they do, lay eggs in the plant crowns, or what ?  Mrs Bouquet

I think they overwinter as pupae under the ground by the lily bulbs, hatch out mate and lay egges on the leaves, that turn into those horrid poo covered things that decimate the plants. oh and the beetles chew holes in the leaves and eat the buds as well. Juts charming all round hahahahaha :tongue2:

Thanks for that Sunshineband.  I do remember that now you've told me.  I only grow a clump of flag iris, so I haven't really been attacked too much.  I only tend to retain knowledge about the things I love and grow, apart from which, I am too old to remember it all      They really are quite an unpleasant pest aren't they.  regards, Mrs Bouquet
