Sweetcorn - two seeds per pot
« on: May 11, 2009, 11:34 »
Hi, this is my first post to this forum. All advice very welcome.

A couple of weeks ago I sowed my sweetcorn into peat pots at two seeds per pot. Now they are coming through very well but I'm wondering what to do next. Should I let both seedlings develop in each pot? Should I pull the weakest looking one, or should I let them both grow and plant them both out together when they are ready? I'm concerned that by pulling them now I might disturb the roots of the other one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi canwick plot and welcome  :D

They do hate root disturbance, so kill off the weakest seedlings to let the strong ones have a good root base. You wont be able to plant them out together or they wont thrive

As Peapod says they don't like their roots disturbed too much, you can always cut the growing part of the weaker one with scissors instead of pulling it out. Never tried this as I only sow one per root trainer.

Thanks folks. I've taken the inner leaf out of the weaker shoot. If it grows back again I'll just do it until they give up!!

Hello Luke,

For next year, or if sowing very very soon.  You might want to consider "chitting" the corn on some wet tissue first.  There are posts on this forum about that.

That will ensure that each you later plant into compost will be a viable seed, and gives them a headstart.  It will also save wasting seeds in this double planting manner.

Hope that helps too.

Make sure that when you plant them out that you soak the peat pot extremely well.  If it is at all dry when you plant it the roots won't escape the pot  :(
