Some greenhouse questions
« on: April 23, 2009, 19:23 »
I invested £35 in 6"x5" plastic greenouse today, mainly because i thought i could have it made in about 15 minutes(although  i now know different). So now i've got about 100 pots with seeds germinating in them along with some seedlings. And also some questions.
Should i cover the pots with anything?
Should i leave the door closed all day?
It seems as soon as the door is open,i get invaded by insects&flies. Will these harm the seeds&plants?

Many thanks if you could offer any help.

I covered my sown seeds this year until they showed, with either plastic bags over the pot or a clear lid over the seed tray. It keeps the compost from drying out.

As soon as they show, you'll need to protect small seedlings from sunlight or they fry.

I would definitly keep the door open during the day, unless it's cool and overcast.

Any bit of sun and the temps will soar in there.

Hope that helps.
Liv.

when the sun is forecast, definitely open the door or you will regret it - if the insects give you any concern, is it not possible to hang a net door (some old net curtains using pegs is a quick solution) so that you can benefit from ventilation and keep the bugs out?

Is this one of those "walk in" greenhouses with the zippered doors?  I bought one of those, erected it and 2 days later the entire thing had collapsed with the wind (which wasn't all that strong), where all the plastic fittings on the bottom frame had sheared  :(  They are not very sturdy and need to be well sheltered ... just pre-warning you if this is the case.
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.

Actually mine had umpteen extra tent pegs as well and was well secured with the tie ropes supplied.  Perhaps that was the problem - it was so rigid with the extras that when the wind did catch it, instead of rolling over, the stress was on those plastic fittings which then gave way.  I am thinking of resurrecting it (all the poles and plastic cover are fine), but using good strong wooden posts at ground level to support and brace the tubing.  It will also be located somewhere where it will be better sheltered from the wind  ;)
