sweet pea woes
« on: April 23, 2009, 18:34 »
Bought some special exhibition seeds last year and they were just coming on in the cold frame, but the mice have got most of them.
So will have to buy some from a garden centre, but has anyone got any ideas of how to protect the pots in the cold frame? >:(

You'll have to cover the top of your pots with a bit of chicken wire..that'll do it

I set traps near my sweet peas (when sown in the Autumn)

I chit them all (between two layers of damp kitchen paper in ramekins) before planting in pots

You can resow now if you have or can buy more seed.  Mouse traps may be the way to go, and peanut butter works well as a bait.  Alternatively, put fine-mesh chicken wire over the bottom of the frame, and cover a panel to go in place of the light too so they can't jump in from any overhanging things.

Might be too late but:

I planted my sweetpeas in Oct in unheated greenhouse.
By end of Feb they were all in the coldframe, lid open all day and closed at night.
I have geese and chickens so chicken wire was laid over the frame when open...
Forgot the chicken wire one day first week of March and the geese got the lot.

BUT........................

Even though most had at best just one leaf left, or some just a stalk, I carried on with them ( and planted some more anyway )  and as I write the ones that got savaged are ALL planted out and doing great. Largest is about 18" and very thick and vigorous.......So do not despair, if there is anything left carry on and see what happens...

Good luck
