What is the best thing to use for a dust bath?  Hubby says he thinks he read somewhere using sand and peat?  ???

we use soil. plain and unadulterated soil.

i tried using sand - bought some builders' sand and also some kiln dried sand, but it was too heavy and didn't float around like soil does when they went in it.
they avoided the dust bath and bathed in the ground next to it! when i changed it so it was just soil, they started using it.

We use cheap compost and mix in ash from fires.  My son has a fire pit for camping out and we put some of that in, they love it.

I use seedling compost as it has lots of sand in it and mix some mite powder into it too.
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Mine love the dry soil near a wall, they have scratched out quite a deep hole making dust baths. Only problem is the white chooks are never white!
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!
