I have some cabbage ready to transplat into veggy plot. The instructions tell me to plant 18" eachway. My question is...can I plant 9" each way using the intermediate plants as greens? Would doing this spoil the "hearts" of the other cabbages?

Hi, in a deep bed system i plant only 12" apart because i don't want huge cabbages just for me and the missus, but things like sprouts on the flat need 2 foot between rows and 18" between plants. I think your system would work for spring cabs. but not for others.

There's no reason why you can't grow any cabbage as greens - it's traditional to do spring greens because there's not much else around then.  You need to cut the ones you'll be getting rid of as soon as they start to touch the plants on either side, and the hearting plants will never know they were there.  Just keep everything well watered and fed.
