Growing under greenhouse staging
« on: April 16, 2009, 14:28 »
As most people, I have staging in the greenhouse and I want to grow things underneath it.  It is a bit darker under there so will it make a major difference to what I can grow?

As you can see there is a high fence behind the greenhouse and on the right about a metre away from it there is a 3 foot high fence.  Help and suggestions appreciated.

I can't help with what to grow as i  take my staging out to plant the tomatoes in the border, and in pots on the other side. I know they are very handy at this time of year but i think they just get in the way later, in a small g/h.

You could put of tin foil covered cardboard at an angle (bit of string from top of staging to top of board so it leant out) That would bounce more light underneath :) To walk past just push it upright.

Hi Elcie
I too have room under my staging where previously I have put seedlings (due to lack of space) and I have to confess they never performed as well as those on top, often becoming quite leggy.  Not sure what the answer is really, but this year when I run out of space (any day now  :D) it is my intention to try putting the more established plants there in the hope that the worst they will suffer is a slowdown in growth until they are planted out (e.g. marigolds, geraniums) therefore leaving the full lit space for the smaller seedlings.  Your plants look good by the way...... :)

Aftr years of trying to grow healthy seedlings under the staging, with all sorts of ways, I have come to the conclusion that it don't werk!! :tongue2: Thye lean over, get spindly and never really make good plants.

I use mine to put the orchids under there on one side (other side has no staging and I overwinter large potted plants there, and use the space for toms etc in summer) as they need a low light rest and this is ideal  :)

Hmmm not looking promising then sunshineband?  The radish, lettuce and rocket I have under there at the moment is looking rather spindly!

On the bright side, I have lots of tomato plants growing that can go under there in a few weeks time as they get bigger!

Sorry Elcie I may have not made that clear... I grow my tomatoes on the side of the greenhouse without staging as there is not enough light underneath. The plants also get very tall of course and need the full height of the greenhouse.
You could start to harden off the radishes, rocket & lettuce as thay can go outside really now. They are quite hardy.
