Hi Everybody, I've just joined and am wanting to know the price of allotments, what size and what is included - I know of a landowner who didn't dismiss the idea of allotments but want's to know details, what he needs to provide and what it entails - he's willing to take things further

Hi Pickle and welcome

The simple answer is as long as a piece of string! Some sites offer loads of things, like water, toilets and leccy. Others offer nothing..private lotty sites tend to be more expensive than council

Ill pop this over to GYO where more people can help

The best way to get area relevant info is to google allotments and steer through until you get to sites about those in your area as cost and amenities vary quite a lot. Good luck with your search, and hope you manage to find a lotty :D

We have just taken on a plot of 10m X 20m approx. It's securely fenced / gated around the whole allotment site and there's a communal tap - that's it, but at only £12 a year I'm more than happy with it!  :D

try your local councils website, you should get some info from there.

my local council website imply plots are about £5 per year  ???  I don't think they've updated it in a long while!  My site is charged per square metre - this year it was 9p rental, 7p for water.  For a 290 sq metre, this works out at just over £24 rent plus £17 for water.  We have good security fencing and locked gates (£5 key deposit required) with standpipes to service 4 plots.  The standpipes are turned off over winter (I suppose to avoid damage) and the taps are given an annual check to make sure they are working properly & also don't leak.

We have a couple of sheds that sell seed, compost and other essentials but this is run by the garden & allotment association, not the council.  There are no toilets or other facilities.

The tenant's agreement is fairly standard (lots of dos and don'ts) but basically as long as you aren't a nuisance to other neighbours you can do virtually anything within reason - except erect a shed or greenhouse without first getting permission.

If a plot has not been cultivated (not unusuall to find it overgrown before the previous tenant finally gives it up), then it is usually rent free up to the next time rent is due (end of March) but you still have to pay for water.  If the previous tenant has left the plot in a big mess (lots of rubbish) the council will offer to clear it but in their timetable which can be up to 6 months ... as you might expect, new tenants will usually get on with it and leave the rubbish near the track side for the council to take away.

One more thing - pensioners and people on benefits get half price rental charges.

Gosh, my allotment is £70 a year, no water, no gates. no livestock allowed.  There is four in a field on the edge of a village and the views are priceless.  So I guess that makes up for it...... ::) :D
