It seems to be slug season!!
« on: August 29, 2011, 14:54 »
In the last few weeks I've seen loads, found a couple of big fat juicy ones eating my cabbages today!!  Most people put pellets around a month or so ago when it was the birds that were the real problem and now the slugs are out in force.  Must be all this rain we've been having plus the fact the brassicas have all had the chance to get to a nice size now.

Is it true a saucer of beer really works in keeping the slugs at bay?  I just use plain old blue pellets, but I've heard they're poisonous for birds and if a bird eats a slug that's been on the pellets, it will die..

If there's something like beer - lord knows I'd hate to waste it on slugs!?!? - that can do the job and is better for the environment, I'd rather use it.  On the other hand, what if the birds got drunk on my beer and started flying into fences etc?  :D

The organic slug pellets are supposed to be wildlife friendly - 'Growing Success' is one brand to try. Beer does work, ie the slugs do like it, but there will always be some who are teetotal and prefer cabbages. You could try a belt and braces approach and try both - they don't mind cheap beer!

You can also trap them under half orange peels as well... just need to take them out and deal with them.
