Ivermec / ivermectin
« on: April 11, 2009, 08:21 »
Hi I was just wondering what was the difference between Ivermec and Ivermectin? and can it be used safely on the chickens also, if it was safe would you have to withdraw from eating the eggs for a curtain time after use?

I have been offered some for my rabbits for £10 through my rabbit associates and it would be good if I could use it on both!

All the best Trina  :D

hi Trina
I dont know if there is a difference between ivermec and ivermectin.
Ivermectin isn't licensed for poultry, which doesnt mean that people dont use it on the girls!
It is favoured by show breeders, but believe it or not it is actually illegal to advise anybody to use an unlicensed product on an animal that it isnt licensed for.
The egg withdrawal is very sketchy, some people say 14 days where others say 28 days.
One very important thing about it is that any discarded eggs must never be fed to dogs.
Dogs do not tolerate ivermectin, not all dogs but especially collie breeds, it is very toxic to them.
Vets do prescribe it for hens but they are allowed to within the law, i do know of people who have used it.
There is a product called Harka mectin which is licensed for pigeons cheaper than ivermectin...basically a generic product, its cheaper as well.
Its something to weigh up for yourself

Thanks for your reply Exbatt! I dont think I could discard all those lovely eggies!!!!  my chickens have no lice or mites I have given them a good check out so unless anything happens I will keep it to one side for the bunnies if need be, it is there!

Thanks again and good luck with your lovely Exbatt girls!!

Ivermectin Eprinex differs from regular Ivomec, which is more expensive and is manufactured for injection rather than as a 'pour on'.
