potatoe shoots coming through
« on: April 07, 2009, 09:33 »
hi i'm new to growing & have searched about but not to sure what to do.
i planted some rooster potatoes seeds in a compost bag 2nd week in march.
the shoots are starting to come throught the soil/compost now.
do i leave them to come out & spread their leaves or do i add more soil/compost on top now & bury the shoots again.
i've read these are main croppers so wont be ready till about august.
up the villa

As I understand it you keep adding more compost and covering up the shoots until the bag is full or until danger of frost has passed. If the bag is full before the last frost you should probably put a bit of fleece over the shoots when frost is forecast.

As Rachael said, keep covering new growth with more compost until the bag is full and then just allow them to carry on growing over the bag until finished, protecting the exposed foliage from any late frosts if necessary.
Make sure they don't dry out and that you have pierced the bag to allow drainage, or your seed potatoes will just rot. That's it - easy peasy  :)
