watering needs to be pretty consistent..... not enough water in dry spells & they can get woody. too much rain after a dry spell & they can split. gorgeous vegetable! we used to pinch them out the farmers fields when we were nippers

i planted mine last year ( first time) and never thought anything of it after protecting my cabbages etc i just didnt grasp that swede is a brassica ( maybe cos its yellow?) and the cabbage whites laid their eggs and the caterpillars stripped them bare.i kept killing them but it was too late, althought they grew new leaves they only grew to cricket ball size.

Had my best year with swede last year.

Got six out of a 32' row & a load grown in pots & transplanted.

No one on our site can grow them to any degree of sucess. The answer lies in the soil!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Cheers DD, that certainly sounds encouraging???  Not ;)

The reason I did ask the question, because all the books rate them as,
"degree of difficulty... easy"... therefore my question..
But thanks for the replies much appreciated.....
I've got the seeds now so waste not, ect...

Cheers PAH
