B loody egg
« on: April 09, 2009, 20:18 »
My wife opened an egg today to find it very b loody, not just a meat spot but a large clot about the size of a halfpenny and the white was completely red.

Any ideas please ?  my hens are in their 2nd laying period.

Yes they seem their normal healthy selves, nice bloom on their feathers, good colour to combs etc.
I just wondered what may have caused it, a scare perhaps or does it mean one of them is on the way to finishing egg laying ?

i think it just means that a blood vessel had ruptured either on the ovary or in the oviduct! think it just happens sometimes, we had one that was exactly as you described a few months back! was from my bluebelle who is still laying well and no further iffy eggs!

I really don't know Rich ???
When Mo did similar (B loody yolk & 10p size clot), it was soft shelled she didn't lay many more after that :(

Thanks the egg must have been from a few days ago and all the eggs have been fine before and after that one. Hopefully whoever it is will be ok.

I found this link which gives some ideas.

I don't think it's anything to worry about Rich, as long as the hens seem OK.  Blood in the egg is usually caused by a blood vessel around the yolk follicle breaking when the yolk is released.  Older hens have these little problems occasionally.  That's why farmer Brown "retires" them after their first laying season.  :(

We'll just have to see how they go, I rather hoped I'd not have to "retire" any for a year or two yet.
