If I was to ....
« on: April 04, 2009, 19:42 »
grow carrots in a large container filled with soil which has been finely riddled and mixed with sharp sand, could I reuse that soil to carrots again or would I need to empty it out and start again?? or even change just some of the soil?

It was hard work but I decided to do it this way instead of straight in the plot, i'm hoping going to be able to use it again but have a feeling i'm going to be told differentley.

Thanks

I have limited experience, but if I knew (as best as possible) that the mix was disease and pest free I would certainly re-use it, adding some Organic Root Veg and Onion Fertiliser to boost the nutrient level.

Mine are in a container filled with 50/50 compost and sharp sand.  I am definately going to use it again this year without any additional nutrients.  Then I'm going to empty them on my awful clay soil bed and dig in for next yer.
Cheese makes everything better.

Ah, that's good news!
I didn't put any compost in though ??? Should I have done? I thought as carrots likes soil that's not that greast, my soil and sand would be good! Oh dear not another boo boo please, I am in competition with my brother and NEED to win this!

My soil is good though, this has just been dug over and hasn't had anything grown in it for years. As I said i took all the stones out and mixed with sharp sand. Can they be fed with any sort of feed later when they start to grow?

Thanks

I think the compost is there partly to make the mix lighter and partly to help retain water - if your soil is a decent loam and you're not stupid enough to try to shift a container too heavy for you, you'll be OK.

I agree with stripey cat.  My soil is heavy clay and no carrot would break through as it sets like concrete.  If you have good soil then why not use it.

Absolutey no chance of moving that container, I would have to empty it out by hand (well spade ;)) That's why i was hoping i didn't need to, took ages sieving it. So that's very good news!
