Tomato Seed in Peat Pellets
« on: April 01, 2009, 16:41 »
I've sown my tomatoes seeds in Jiffy 7/peat pellets and they're doing really well, but they now need putting into individual pots, do I remove the outer coat of the pellets or leave them on (it looks like it would rot down) - have thrown away the box the pellets came in!!!! Advice, as ever would be most welcome.

Just leave it on as it rots away  :)

Thanks Sunshineband - that's what I hoped you'd say, one less job!

seeing as hey jude has finished with this thread can i hijack it & ask how long does it take for tom seeds to come through the soil once you've sown them.
i have mine in my airing cupbard in the dark covered with plastic sheeting, they have only been there less than a week 6 days to exact.
so i'm just wondering how long do they take to come through the soil as i am new to growing.

Might be best to check at least twice a day.  If nothing seems to be emerging in the next day or so move the pots onto a warm windowsill.   I have found that if you sow too deeply tomatoes can struggle to emerge out of the compost if kept in a dark airing cupboard.   If nothing seems to be happening in the next couple of days carefully scrape a little compost on the top to see if there is any activity.    I once bought a packet of Floridity which were duds (tried sowing 3 times without success) and I got a refund from the seed supplier.

There are very few seeds I startoff in the airing cupboard, Tomatoes are not one of them - they bomb off on a nice warm window sill quite easily

I sowed a lot on the 24th March. Kept in the light in a polythene bag. Went away for a few days and when we returned on 31st, they had all germinated. By the look of them some had been through for a couple of days. The old aluminium foil has rescued them, though.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
