Soil Mix for a Raised Bed
« on: April 02, 2009, 14:08 »
Now the chickens are in an enclosed run, we've had most of the garden returfed and left a patch about 11' x 4' to build a raised vegetable bed, about scaffolding plank (12" deep).  Would be grateful if anyone could recommend what I should fill it with (eg topsoil, compost etc) and in what proportions.  I am hoping to grow runner beans, beetroot, lettuces and anything else I can fit in.  Have just ordered John's book so will see what seeds come with it for further inspiration.  Thanx.

I got some free soil from ebay and sifted it to remove any stones then mixed it with several bags of farmyard manure from homebase and some compost - I'll let you know if anything grows in it!

There's no 'true' formula for raised beds, it's more a matter of what you can get hold of and/or afford. About half can be the existing soil cleared of most stones and weeds, then blend in what you can of old growbags, compost, old manure, perlite, some sharp sand and handfuls of blood-fish-bonemeal. Stir well and let settle a few weeks before planting.

One thing I have noticed is that it dries quite quickly so make sure when you do plant you water regularly

Thank you all for your replies.  I will see what I can get hold of in the next couple of weeks.  The chap who laid the turf said he might be able to get me some topsoil, and I'll look out for compost on special offer.
