Some types deffinitely say 'do better in a green house' or 'best grown outside'.
If you have space and if we have a good year weather and blightwise you can grow them in or out.  :)
But take note of the IFS that way there's a reason if it all goes wrong  :tongue2:

i planted mine outside last year and apart from the blight it was a huge success i found that a sunny warm wall will let anything grow, must admit i didnt use a special outside type after all the first toms were grown outside it was later on we put them in glass houses

Hi, you definately need outdoor varieties ( there is a difference ) Gardeners Delight is an old favourite and a lovely flavour.

We grew them in the greenhouse and outdoors last year.

The only tomatoes that set fruit were the ones that were outdoors. We got literally less than five (whole tomatoes) from the greenhouse.

How bizarre - I was in B&Q earlier and just out of curiosity looking up some tomato seeds  (ok, I bought 2 packets) when I could hear 2 women behind me talking about growing tomatoes in baskets.  I was only thinking it seemed like a good idea as the 2 baskets I have in mind are either side of the kitchen door on a south facing wall so gets very warm  :D

Go for it Plottered - you've got nothing to lose.  Unless you were growing dwarf/patio varieties, perhaps limit 1-2 plants per basket, and keep well watered during dry periods.
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.

I'm going to try Tumbling Toms in baskets this year, rather than in patio pots (I had the sudden realisation that there's unused space over my head in the glassed-in side passage, so I have to fill it with plants).  I think you'd have fun with some of the larger bush sorts in a basket, and indeterminates would be hilarious if you had enough head-space to let them trail freely.
