Our chooks are coming up to their first birthday.  All seem healthy, still laying well and lively around the garden.

Over that last week or so they've started to develop bare backsides.  Is this the start of their first moult or is there something more sinister I shouuld be cheking for?

If it is coming up to there first birthday I would say it is there first moult.  I would not harm to check each on over for crawlies.  Areas to check the vent area and arm pit.

It's probably because they are laying so well!! All our Amberlinks have bare botties and all laying every day. We have found that our other good layers rirx have bare butts and theirs are bright red!!

ahhh good question and answer.  I bought 4 Marans hens and one has a red,bald, swollen, bottom.  They are all laying.  I dusted them for mights as soon as I got them, and have dusted them again.  I wasn't sure what was wrong. I hope this is the answer.   yf Betty

one of my hens is acting a miserable and has a dirty bum so  i will watch it (the chicken) and clean it (the bum). i imagine it's off-colour cuz it's ate something that doesn't agree with it, am i right?

To much fruit can give a runny bum. For us with arms and those that are armless(Chickens).

i haven't given them fruit, it looks less runny and more 'white' back there, in other words not too bad yet it makes me wonder.

My orpingtons have all recently developed bare bums too. This seemed to follow a small amount of feather pecking, not initially around their bums but around the head and neck area. Sadly I no longer have the six birds I started out with due to the loss of one of them today. I had decided after reading a lot about stockholm tar to give this stuff a try. I did try it however it would seem that I have the only birds that enjoy eating the stuff. It didn't stop the feather pecking and today on return from work I found one of my birds dead outside the coup within her run. Very frustrating. My birds have a large run plenty of layers pellets/mixed corn and vegetables,plentiful supply of water and grit and are cleaned out regularly I let them roam around very large garden as often as I can and they are great layers. I also noticed that some of them have red bums too.

Finally got a photo.  This is Vindaloo, she has the barest bum.  All seem really healthy, still laying fine and enjoying life.

Should I be worried about bare bums like this?
